About the Westland Wilderness Trust

The Westland Wilderness Trust is officially responsible for the construction and management of the West Coast Wilderness Trail. The day-to-day operations of both the building programme and the maintenance and management of the Trail are managed by the Westland District Council and the Grey District Council. The staff of both Councils have been actively involved in the design, construction and preparation for the official opening of the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

The ongoing maintenance programme for the Trail will be primarily funded by a small proportion of the bookings made by Trail users utilising companies and organisations that are part of the Trail's  Official Partner Programme. This does not add to the cost of the rider's experience: it is a contribution paid by these businesses to actively support the sustainable delivery of the West Coast Wilderness Trail experience.

The two Councils and other supporters of the Trail will also support maintenance.

Contributions to the maintenance and further development of the West Coast Wilderness Trail can be sent to: West Coast Wilderness Trail, c/o Diane Maitland, Westland District Council, Private Bag 704, Hokitika 7842

Friends of the Trail

The experience of other trails in the New Zealand Cycle Trail network is that a lot of local people make contributions in many varied forms that benefit the long-term sustainability of the trail. This can be in the form of volunteering to maintain trail surfaces, making donations or supporting the trail in many other ways. If you would like to know more about the opporunity to support the West Coast Wilderness Trail please email Diane Maitland on diane.maitland@westlanddc.govt.nz

Supporters

A huge "thank you" to all of the people and organisations who have supported the initial proposal to develop the West Coast Wilderness Trail and to those who have contributed to it's construction. A particular note of thanks goes to the Department of Conservation, without whom this project would not have been possible, and Development West Coast who have been major funding contributors. Of course the New Zealand Government, through the Ministry for Industry, Business and Employment, have driven the entire project nationally.

Official Partners

The New Zealand Cycle Trail's Official Partner programme has been created to enable local businesses to partner with cycle trails in their region, for mutual benefit.

The Official Partner programme aims to build the profile of the West Coast WiIderness Trail, increase the turnover of businesses that provide related goods and services and generate increased downstream economic benefits to the communities of the West Coast.

The Programme offers significant benefits to both parties and recognises the importance of effective partnerships to the sustainable success of the Trail. To understand the benefits and obligations of becomming an Official Partner of the West Coast Wilderness Trail, please download the attached PDF.
